Uber Black Driver Requirements Driving Record for CA Drivers

For California drivers, Uber Black takes more than a black luxury car. Your driving record has to hold up under Uber’s screening, the state’s commercial rules, and an insurance company’s underwriting. If you are getting set up, our page on Uber Black and limo insurance in California covers the commercial insurance side. This post is about your driving record: what Uber checks, what can disqualify you, and how your record changes what you pay.

Uber Black Driver Requirements Driving Record: What California Drivers Should Check

For owner-operators, the driving record review is more than an onboarding step. It decides whether you can drive, which insurance companies will consider you, and what you pay once coverage is in force. We see it all the time: two drivers with similar cars can get very different quotes because of their driving history.

Uber’s driver requirements are separate from an insurance company’s rules, and they can change, so confirm Uber’s current requirements for California before you apply. Here is what Uber lists for new drivers in Los Angeles today:

  • A valid U.S. driver’s license
  • Minimum age of 25 for new drivers
  • At least one year of licensed driving experience in the U.S.
  • A motor vehicle record check and a background check
  • For Uber Black, a driver rating of 4.90 or higher, based on your most recent 500 rated trips. This is the current number on Uber’s website. Many driver guides still list 4.85, so go by Uber’s page.

A clean record doesn’t guarantee approval, but it gives both Uber and the underwriters fewer reasons to question the risk. Uber Black customers pay for a premium trip, and passenger safety is the reason the screening is stricter than for a regular rideshare. The same safety focus drives how insurance companies price a black car.

Before you buy a car for Uber Black, order your California driving record (driver abstract) from the DMV and read it carefully. Look for moving violations, at-fault accidents, suspensions, and DUI actions, including items that were resolved but still show on your record. Also make sure your name, address, and license class match your other documents. Small mismatches can delay a quote.

Recent Updates to Uber’s Driver Requirements (2026)

Uber has tightened several requirements, and many older articles online still show the old numbers. Here is what Uber’s own pages say as of October 2026:

  • Minimum age is 25 in California. Uber raised the minimum age for new drivers in California to 25, up from 21, which is still the minimum in most other states. Uber’s Los Angeles page confirms it.
  • Uber Black rating is now 4.90. Many driver guides still list 4.85. Uber now asks Uber Black drivers to keep a 4.90 or higher rating based on their most recent 500 rated trips. If it drops below 4.90, Uber checks it again after 50 more trips.
  • Background checks now look further back. In June 2026, Uber announced that criminal checks will cover every place a driver has ever lived, not only recent addresses, and that convictions for violent felonies and sexual offenses now permanently bar a driver, no matter how old they are.

Uber can change these rules again, so check Uber’s site for your city before you apply or buy a car.

Driving History, Background Checks and Violations That Can Affect Uber Black

The Uber background check runs in two parts. The motor vehicle record check comes first and confirms your driving history and license status. The second part reviews criminal history. Uber reruns these checks at least once a year and uses continuous monitoring, so a new violation after you start driving can still affect your account.

Violations that commonly disqualify a driver include:

  • DUI or other drug or alcohol driving offenses
  • Reckless driving
  • Hit-and-run
  • Driving with a suspended license
  • Too many moving violations or at-fault accidents in a short time

On the criminal side, Uber says felonies such as fraud, property damage, and harassment generally disqualify a driver for seven years after the conviction, and pending charges also disqualify. Violent felonies and sexual offenses are a permanent bar. Rules can vary by state, so check with Uber if something on your record worries you.

Keep in mind that a violation doesn’t only affect your Uber account. If you also drive for Lyft or another black car company, each one runs its own check, and your safety record follows you to every application.

Insurance companies run their own review. Even if Uber approves you, a commercial livery insurance company may want a clean period before it offers terms. Minor tickets don’t always disqualify you, but several tickets or at-fault accidents can change the monthly premium a lot.

Driving record item How insurance companies may view it Possible effect
Recent moving violations Extra underwriting attention Higher premium or fewer companies
At-fault accidents Number and how recent Higher premium, especially with tickets
DUI Major violation Can lead to a declined application
Reckless driving Major violation Fewer options or a decline
Suspended license history Concern about license status May need a clean period first
Hit-and-run Serious violation Can lead to a decline

Your Driver Abstract, Vehicle Requirements and Commercial Coverage Before You Commit

Before you buy a vehicle for Uber Black, put the paperwork ahead of the purchase. A current driver abstract shows license status, moving violations, at-fault accidents, and other activity. Bring the actual document instead of relying on memory, because a ticket that seems minor can change a quote.

Vehicle requirements deserve the same early attention. Uber Black has its own list of eligible makes, model years, colors, and seating, and the insurance company has to accept the car for commercial livery use. Our Uber Black car list shows which vehicles qualify in Los Angeles. Confirm the VIN, garaging address, and number of seats before you sign.

Uber Black also requires a TCP permit from the California Public Utilities Commission. As part of that, the TCP holder has to enroll every driver in the DMV Employer Pull Notice program, which sends updates when something changes on a driver’s record, and drivers have to be in a drug and alcohol testing program. Your driving record stays under review the whole time you operate.

A personal policy or rideshare endorsement won’t cover Uber Black trips. You need commercial livery insurance. Based on the 2026 quotes we see, an owner-operator with a clean record should budget about $1,000 to $1,500 a month per car. If you have violations, it can be a lot higher. A driver with a newer license or a recent claim can also pay more.

  • Order your driver abstract before you request quotes.
  • Check that your car is on the Uber Black list in your city.
  • List every driver and disclose all violations, accidents, and claims.
  • Send us the VIN before you sign, so we can quote that exact car.

One more thing to check before you commit to a vehicle is the seat count. Our post on the cheapest commercial insurance for Uber Black explains why an SUV with 9 or more seats doubles the required CPUC liability limit.
