Uber Black can pay more than standard rideshare in California, but the entry bar is much higher. Your car has to meet Uber’s age, color, interior, seating, and condition rules, and you need commercial insurance and a state permit before you take a single trip. Our page on Uber Black and limo insurance in California covers the insurance side in depth. This post walks through the Uber Black car requirements in California so you can check your car, and your numbers, before you apply.
Uber Black Car Requirements California: Which Cars Qualify for Uber Black
Uber publishes vehicle requirements for each city. As of October 2026, Uber’s Los Angeles requirements page lists these rules for Uber Black and Uber Black SUV:
| Requirement | Uber Black | Uber Black SUV |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle age | 7 years old or newer | 7 years old or newer |
| Exterior color | Black only | Black only |
| Interior | Black leather or vegan leather | Black leather or vegan leather |
| Seating | At least 4 passengers plus the driver | At least 6 passengers plus the driver |
| Condition | No cosmetic damage or missing pieces, working windows, no visible stains, working A/C | Same |
Uber also keeps a separate list of eligible makes and models, and it can change by city and model year. A car can be black, leather, and luxurious and still not be on the list because of the model or trim. Check the eligible vehicles list for your city before you buy or lease, not after. Our Uber Black car list shows every make and model on the Los Angeles list.

What Qualifies You for Uber Black as a Driver
The car is only half of it. To drive Uber Black in California, you also need:
- A high rating. Uber’s Los Angeles page lists a star rating of 4.85 or higher.
- A TCP permit. Uber Black is charter-party transportation, so it falls under the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). The insurance carrier files your proof of coverage with the CPUC as part of the permit.
- Commercial auto insurance. A personal policy, even with a rideshare endorsement, doesn’t work for Uber Black.
- Proper registration and inspection on the vehicle you will drive.
The Black Car Insurance You Need
Uber Black needs commercial livery insurance, with the car scheduled on the policy for business use. Under CPUC General Order 115-G, a charter-party carrier with vehicles that seat 7 passengers or fewer must carry at least $750,000 in liability coverage. The insurance carrier, not you, files proof of that coverage with the CPUC. Most standard insurance companies don’t write livery at all, so this coverage usually comes through general agencies that specialize in it.
Underwriters will look at more than the car. Expect questions about your driving record, how long you’ve held your license, where the car is garaged, how many miles you drive, whether you also take private clients, and how many vehicles you run.
Is Uber Black Worth It With 2026 Insurance Costs?
It can be, but only if you run the numbers first. For one owner-operator, the real 2026 commercial insurance quotes we see in California are about $1,000 to $1,500 a month per car. You may see ads for Uber Black insurance at $400 a month. A compliant California livery policy at that price doesn’t exist.
So the question isn’t whether insurance is expensive. It is whether your car can bring in enough Uber Black trips each month to cover insurance, the car payment, fuel, maintenance, Uber’s fees, and slow weeks, and still leave you a profit. Airport runs and regular private clients help. A financed luxury SUV with thin demand makes it harder. If you plan to grow past Uber into private and limo work, our post on limo insurance in California covers what changes as you add cars.
