You can get cheap SR22 insurance and have it filed with the California DMV the same day. At IIS Insurance Services, we usually send the SR22 filing to the DMV the same day you buy the policy, and our page on cheap SR22 insurance in California explains how pricing works. What decides whether it’s actually cheap is usually not the premium. It’s the broker fee the agency adds on top.
We bind multiple SR22 policies every day, for drivers who own a car and for drivers who don’t. So to us, it’s very clear what increases and decreases the price. Below is what we see, what things cost, and how to avoid overpaying when you need your license back in a hurry.
Can you really get an SR22 filed the same day?
Yes. In California, an SR22 (you’ll also see it written SR-22) isn’t a separate type of insurance. It’s a certificate your insurance company files with the DMV to prove you carry at least the state’s minimum liability coverage. Once you’re bound and paid, the insurance company sends the filing to the DMV electronically.

At IIS Insurance Services, it usually goes out the same day. What slows people down is almost never the filing itself. It’s missing information. If you have these ready when you call, things move fast:
- Your California driver’s license number, or the number on your suspension notice
- Your date of birth and home address
- The vehicle’s VIN, if you own a car you want covered
- Any paperwork from the DMV or the court about the requirement
Keep in mind that the DMV still has to process the filing on its end, and you may have other steps to clear your suspension. The filing is one piece. We can’t speed up the DMV, but we can make sure the insurance part is never the thing holding you back.
What does SR22 insurance cover in California?
The certificate itself doesn’t add coverage. It proves you meet California’s insurance requirements. The policy behind it has to carry at least the state’s minimum liability limits:
- $30,000 for injury or death to one person
- $60,000 for injury or death to more than one person
- $15,000 for damage to someone else’s property
That minimum liability coverage pays for damage you cause to other people. It doesn’t fix your own car. If you own a newer or financed vehicle, you may want or need more insurance coverage than the state minimum. If you just want your license back and low costs, minimum liability is what the DMV is checking for.
How much does same-day SR22 insurance cost?
Same-day filing shouldn’t cost you more. Speed comes from how fast your agency works, not from a premium upgrade. What you pay depends on three main things.
1. Whether you own a car
If you don’t own a vehicle, a non-owner policy is usually the cheapest way to meet the requirement. For non-owner policies, we commonly see an insurance premium between $25 and $50 a month, depending on your driving record and where you live. If you own a car, the price depends on the vehicle, your record, and your ZIP code, so it’s best to get real insurance quotes instead of guessing. Our post on how much SR22 insurance costs in California breaks down each charge.
2. Your driving record
A DUI, an at-fault accident, no insurance, or a string of tickets will all affect your price. Each insurance company weighs these differently, which is why shopping several carriers matters so much.
3. The broker fee
This is the one most people don’t see coming, and it’s where a “cheap” policy stops being cheap. We’ll break it down for you in a minute.
Is there an SR22 filing fee?
Some carriers charge a small one-time filing fee to send the certificate to the DMV. It’s usually a minor part of the total. If you’re comparing quotes, ask whether the filing fee is already included so you’re comparing apples to apples.
Separately, the DMV may charge a reinstatement fee to restore your driving privilege once everything is in place. That fee goes to the state, not to your agent, and it applies no matter where you buy your policy. Your DMV notice will tell you what you owe.
Why do SR22 agencies charge such high broker fees?
Almost every agency in this business charges a broker fee, especially on non-owner policies. From what we see every day in this market, most agencies charge $200 or more.
Here’s the honest reason. Non-owner premiums are small, so the commission an agency earns is small too. To make the sale worth their time, a lot of agencies put the cost into a big upfront fee. So you might see a $30 a month policy advertised and walk out having paid $250 or more on day one.
How IIS Insurance Services handles it: We charge broker fees too, and for many clients our fee is in the normal range for this industry. We’ll always tell you the amount before you pay. The difference is that we don’t turn anyone down. If you’re going through a tough time and money is tight, we’ll lower the fee, and sometimes we’ll waive it completely, so you can still get insured and reinstate your license fast. Nobody should stay off the road just because they can’t afford a big upfront fee.
Whoever you buy from, ask for the total upfront cost in writing before you pay: the first month’s premium, the broker fee, the filing fee, and anything else. If an agency won’t give you a clear number, that tells you something.
Do you need SR22 insurance after a DUI?
A DUI is one of the most common reasons California drivers need an SR22. After a DUI, the DMV will usually require proof of insurance before your driving privilege can be reinstated or before you can get a restricted license. Other common reasons include being caught uninsured, an accident while uninsured, or too many points on your record.
A DUI will raise your auto insurance rates, and some carriers won’t write DUI drivers at all. That’s where working with an agency that shops many companies helps. We write these policies for DUI drivers every day, and we know which carriers are more reasonable for that situation.
How do you find the cheapest same-day SR22 insurance?
- Compare the total, not the monthly price. A $25 a month policy with a $250 broker fee costs more in the first year than a $35 a month policy with a small fee.
- Use an agency that shops multiple carriers. Pricing varies a lot from one carrier to the next. An independent agency can pull several insurance quotes at once instead of you calling around all afternoon.
- Go non-owner if you don’t own a car. Don’t pay for owner auto coverage if you don’t have a vehicle. A non-owner policy meets the requirement for a lot less.
- Pay on time, every time. The cheapest filing is the one you only have to buy once (more on that below).
- Call early in the day. It gives us the most time to get you bound and get the filing out that day.
What happens if your SR22 policy lapses?
If your policy cancels for any reason, including a missed payment, your carrier has to notify the DMV. That can put your license right back into suspension. Then you’re starting over with a new policy, a new filing, and possibly new fees.
In California, you generally need to keep the SR22 in place for three years from the date your driving privilege is reinstated. Letting it lapse during that time is the most expensive mistake you can make. Set up automatic payments if you can, and call your agent before you move.
Is same-day SR22 the same as “instant” SR22?
Not quite. Some websites promise an instant filing. You may get your policy documents right away, but the filing still has to go from the insurance company to the DMV and then be processed there. “Same day” is the honest version: we bind coverage and send the filing to the DMV that day. Be careful with any site that guarantees your license will be valid within minutes.
Frequently asked questions about cheap SR22 insurance
Do I need a car to get SR22 insurance in California?
No. If you don’t own a car, you can get a non-owner SR22 policy. It covers your liability when you drive a car you don’t own, and it’s usually the cheapest way to meet the requirement.
How much is non-owner SR22 insurance per month?
We commonly see non-owner premiums between $25 and $50 a month in California. Your actual price depends on your driving record and location. Watch out for broker fees, which at many agencies run $200 or more.
Can I get an SR22 on a weekend?
You can often buy coverage on a weekend, but the DMV processes filings on its own schedule. Call us and we’ll tell you exactly when your filing will go out.
Does a same-day SR22 cost more?
It shouldn’t. Filing speed depends on your agency, not on paying extra. If someone charges a “rush” fee, ask what it’s actually for.
How long do I need to keep an SR22 in California?
Generally three years from when your driving privilege is reinstated. Check your DMV notice, because your situation may have its own requirements.
