You can buy cheap SR22 insurance online in California, and you don’t have to visit the office to do it. The catch is that the cheapest price you see on a screen is rarely the price you end up paying. At IIS Insurance Services, we are transparent, and we always encourage you to speak with one of our licensed SR22 insurance specialists before making a decision. We bind multiple SR22 policies every day, and our guide to cheap SR22 insurance in California explains how pricing works across carriers.
We talk to drivers every day who started online, got a quote that looked great, and then found out about fees, missing filings, or coverage that didn’t count with the DMV. So to us, it’s very clear what saves money online and what ends up costing more. Here’s what you can handle from your phone, what still needs a person, and the mistakes we see drivers make most often.
Can you really buy SR22 insurance online?
Yes, for the most part. You can compare quotes, buy a policy, sign documents, and pay without leaving home. The SR22 itself is not something you file yourself. It’s a form your insurance provider sends to the California DMV to prove you carry at least the state’s minimum liability coverage. Once your policy is bound and paid, the insurance company files it electronically.

So “buying SR22 online” really means buying the right policy online from a company that can file the SR22 form in California. That second part trips up a lot of drivers. Not every company that sells car insurance online will file an SR22, and not every online seller writes policies in California.
At IIS Insurance Services, most of our SR22 clients never come into the office. They call or reach us online, we shop the carriers, they sign and pay, and we usually get the filing to the DMV the same day.
What you can and can’t do when you buy SR22 insurance online
What you can usually do online
- Get SR22 insurance quotes from one or more companies
- Compare monthly rates and the total cost to start
- Sign your application and policy documents
- Pay your first premium and set up automatic payments
- Get a copy of your policy and proof that the SR22 was filed
What still depends on people and the DMV
- Choosing a carrier that accepts your driving record
- Making sure the policy type matches your situation (owner or non-owner)
- The DMV processing the filing on its end
- Any other steps to clear your suspension, like paying a reinstatement fee or finishing a DUI program
A website can take your payment in two minutes. It can’t tell you whether a different carrier would have cost you half as much, or whether you picked the wrong policy type for your situation. That’s where a real person still saves you money. This is why we always try to talk to our potential customers before they make these important decisions.
How much does SR22 insurance online really cost?
Your price depends on the same things whether you buy online or by phone: whether you own a car, your driving violations, your ZIP code, and the carrier. Buying online doesn’t make the insurance premium itself cheaper. The carriers set the rates, not the website.
If you don’t own a car, a non-owner policy is usually the most affordable option. For non-owner SR22 policies, we commonly see premiums between $25 and $50 a month in California, depending on your record and where you live. If you own a car, the price depends on the vehicle and your history, so you need a real quote.
Then there are the fees on top of the premium. That’s where online prices get misleading.
What’s the difference between the insurance premium, filing fee, and broker fee?
When you’re comparing SR22 insurance online, make sure you know which of these you’re looking at:
- Insurance premium: what the carrier charges for the coverage, usually paid monthly.
- SR22 filing fee: a small one-time charge some carriers add to send the SR22 form to the DMV.
- Broker fee: what the agency charges for its work. This one can be bigger than the first month’s premium, and in most cases it is.
- DMV reinstatement fee: paid to the state to restore your license. It’s the same no matter where you buy.
A lot of online ads show only the monthly premium. That’s how a “$29 a month” SR22 turns into $250 or more on the first day.
Why don’t online SR22 quotes show the broker fee?
Most online quote tools show the carrier’s premium and stop there. The broker fee usually shows up later, on the phone or at checkout, and on non-owner SR22 policies it often runs $200 or more. We explain why agencies charge it, and why it’s so common on small policies, in our guide to the cheapest SR22 insurance same day.
Buying online doesn’t make that fee go away. Plenty of websites that sell SR22 are agencies too. What matters is whether they tell you the full number before you pay or after.
How IIS Insurance Services handles it: We tell you the broker fee before you pay, not after. For most clients our fee is in the normal range for this industry, but we don’t turn anyone away. If money is tight because you’re going through a tough time, tell one of our licensed SR22 specialists. We’ll lower the fee, and sometimes we’ll waive it, so you can still get insured and get your license back.
Do driving violations change your online SR22 quote?
Yes, a lot. A DUI, an at-fault accident, driving without insurance, or several tickets will all push your rates up. Each carrier weighs driving violations differently. One company might charge you double what another charges for the exact same record.
This is the biggest weakness of buying from a single online company. You only see that one company’s price. If their underwriting doesn’t like your record, you’ll pay more and never know a better rate was out there. An agency that shops several carriers can show you the spread and pick the one that treats your situation best.
One more thing: be accurate when you fill out an online application. If a ticket or accident is left off, the carrier will usually find it when they run your record. The price can go up after you buy, or the policy can be cancelled. A cancelled SR22 policy gets reported to the DMV, and that can suspend your license again.
What liability coverage do you need for an SR22 in California?
The SR22 proves you carry at least California’s minimum liability coverage:
- $30,000 for injury or death to one person
- $60,000 for injury or death to more than one person
- $15,000 for damage to someone else’s property
That’s the floor. Minimum liability pays for damage you cause to others, not for your own car. If your car is financed or worth a lot, you may need full coverage on top of that. If you’re mainly trying to reinstate your license and keep costs low, minimum liability coverage is what the DMV checks for. Our post on what SR-22 insurance covers explains what the policy behind your SR-22 pays for, and what it doesn’t.
Watch out for policies that look cheap because they’re written for another state. If the online seller isn’t licensed in California or doesn’t file a California SR22, the DMV won’t accept it, and you’ve paid for nothing.
Red flags when buying SR22 insurance online
- Only a monthly price, no total. Ask for the full cost to start: first premium, filing fee, and broker fee.
- “Instant SR22” promises. You can get policy documents instantly, but the DMV still has to process the filing. Same day is realistic. Instant license reinstatement is not.
- No California license number. Any agent selling insurance in California should have a license you can look up with the California Department of Insurance.
- No one to call. If something goes wrong with your filing, you want a real person who can check with the carrier and the DMV.
- Pressure to buy more than you need. If you don’t own a car, you usually don’t need an owner policy. A non-owner policy meets the requirement for a lot less.
How to get the most affordable online SR22, step by step
- Find your DMV notice. It tells you why you need an SR22 and what else you have to do.
- Decide owner or non-owner. No car in your name usually means a non-owner policy.
- Get more than one quote. Either from several carriers or from an agency that shops them for you.
- Compare the total cost, not just the monthly rate. Include every fee.
- Be honest on the application. It protects you from a surprise price change or cancellation later.
- Confirm the filing. Ask your agent when the SR22 went to the DMV.
- Set up automatic payments. In California you generally need to keep the SR22 for three years from the date your license is reinstated. A missed payment can start the whole thing over.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to buy SR22 insurance online?
Not by itself. The carrier sets the premium, whether you buy online or by phone. What saves money is comparing several carriers and watching the fees.
How fast can I get an SR22 if I buy online?
Once your policy is bound and paid, the filing can usually go to the DMV the same day. At IIS Insurance Services, that’s our normal turnaround.
Can I get a non-owner SR22 online?
Yes. A non-owner policy covers your liability when you drive a car you don’t own. It’s usually the most affordable way to meet the SR22 requirement if you don’t have a car.
Do I need to print the SR22 form?
You don’t have to, because the insurance company files it electronically with the DMV. But if you’re trying to speed up the process, in a lot of cases our licensed SR22 specialists advise printing the SR22 form and taking it to the DMV in person. Either way, keep a copy of your policy and filing confirmation for your records.
What if I get cancelled after buying online?
The carrier has to notify the DMV, and your license can be suspended again. Call your agent right away to get new coverage and a new filing.
