Best Non Owner SR22 Insurance California: Same-Day Filing and Delays

When your license is suspended and you do not own a car, the thing you want is simple: the filing on the DMV’s record today, so you can start getting your license back. This post is about the filing side of a non-owner SR-22: what we need from you to get it to the DMV the same day, and the few things that can hold it up. For what a non-owner policy covers and who needs one, see our page on non-owner SR-22 insurance.

Non-owner SR-22 insurance in California: the basics before you call

A non-owner SR-22 is a liability-only policy in your name, with a certificate of proof of financial responsibility that the insurance carrier files electronically with the California DMV. Here is what IIS Insurance Services tells every caller before we quote:

  • You do not need a car, and a non-owner policy does not cover a car registered to you. If you buy one later, the filing moves to an owner policy.
  • Premiums with the insurance companies we work with run about $25 to $50 a month. The filing fee averages about $25 per filing, charged once per policy term (every six months on a six-month policy, once a year on an annual policy), and it is separate from the premium.
  • The policy carries the state minimum liability, $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for injury and $15,000 for property damage, which is all the SR-22 requires.
  • A Social Security number is optional. None of the insurance companies we work with require it. We insure drivers with a valid foreign license, an AB 60 license, or an ITIN.
  • IIS Insurance Services charges a broker fee, disclosed in writing before you buy. We never turn anyone away, and we lower or waive the fee for drivers in hardship.
  • We quote and bind by phone, and we usually get the filing to the DMV the same day. Seven languages. Sherman Oaks office. Call (877) 210-9514.

What the best non-owner SR22 insurance in California looks like: a filing on the DMV’s record the same day

Since every non-owner SR22 insurance policy in California carries the same state minimum liability limits, the differences between agencies come down to three things: the premium, the broker fee, and how fast the filing reaches the DMV. The filing speed is the one people underestimate. The DMV does not lift a suspension that requires proof of financial responsibility until the insurance carrier’s certificate is on the record, and after a DUI there is also a reissue fee to pay. A policy that is bound today but filed next week leaves you suspended for a week you did not need to lose.

IIS Insurance Services binds multiple SR22 insurance policies every day, owner SR22 and non-owner, and the filing usually goes to the DMV the same day the policy is bound. That is the category we work hardest to win: not the cheapest number on a screen, but the filing on the record the day you call.

What we need from you on the call

  • Your full name exactly as it appears on your California driver license.
  • Your driver license number and date of birth.
  • Your address.
  • What caused the requirement: a DUI, an accident without insurance, too many points, or a court order.
  • Whether there is any car registered in your name. If there is, a non-owner policy is the wrong product, and we will say so.

That is the whole list. No car information, no Social Security number, no passport. The insurance company’s application asks a few more questions, and we fill it in with you by phone.

What delays a non-owner SR-22 filing at the DMV

Most filings go through without a hitch. When one does not, it is usually one of the following, and every one of them is avoidable if you know about it before you call.

The name or license number does not match the DMV record

The insurance carrier files the certificate under your driver license number, and the DMV matches it to your record. A middle name left off, a hyphenated last name typed differently, or one wrong digit in the license number means the certificate does not attach to your record. Read your number from the license itself, not from memory.

The old policy was canceled before the new filing was on the record

If you are switching from another insurance company, the order matters. When an SR-22 policy is canceled for any reason during the three-year period, the insurance company notifies the DMV and the driving privilege is suspended again. Make sure the new certificate is on the DMV’s record before you cancel the old policy. We check that before we tell you it is safe to cancel.

The driver is not sure what the DMV requires

Sometimes we see a driver who assumes they need an SR-22 because a friend did, or who was told by a court that proof is required but has not checked the DMV record. The state, through the DMV or the court, decides when proof of financial responsibility is required and when the three years end, not the insurance company. If you are not sure, check your driving record with the DMV first, then call us. It saves a filing that was not needed, or catches one that was needed sooner.

Keeping the best non-owner SR22 insurance in California in force for three years

The certificate stays on your DMV record for three years from the first date insurance is filed. The policy that carries it has to be renewed on time for the whole period. A missed payment that cancels the policy puts you back where you started, so if you pay monthly, set the payments up so they cannot be missed, and if you can pay the term in full, that usually costs less. When the three years are over, the DMV does not send a notice; confirm with the DMV that the requirement has ended before you ask the insurance company to remove the filing.

If you buy a car during the three years, the non-owner policy will not cover it. Call before you sign the purchase paperwork, so the filing can move to owner SR22 insurance without a gap. Our post on non-owner SR-22 insurance online walks through that switch, and our post on the cheapest non-owner SR-22 insurance covers how the premium is set.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get SR22 insurance if I don’t own a car?

Yes. Non-owner SR22 insurance is written in your name without a vehicle, and the insurance carrier files the certificate with the DMV. IIS Insurance Services binds these by phone and usually files the same day.

Is a non-owner SR-22 cheaper than a regular SR-22?

Usually, yes. With the insurance companies IIS Insurance Services works with, non-owner SR-22 premiums run about $25 to $50 a month, because the policy covers only liability and no specific car. An owner policy for the same driver costs more.

What is a non-owner SR-22 insurance policy?

It is a liability policy for a driver who does not own a car, with an SR-22 certificate filed on it. It satisfies the DMV’s proof of financial responsibility requirement; it does not cover a car registered to you.

Who offers non-owner SR-22 insurance in California?

Not every insurance company does. IIS Insurance Services works with several that do, compares them for your record, and handles the filing with the DMV so you do not have to find one on your own.

How much is non-owner SR22 insurance per month?

For a non-owner policy, about $25 to $50 a month with the insurance companies we work with, plus a filing fee that averages about $25 per policy term, charged again at each renewal. The violation and the record set the exact number.
